PELADA

Montréal electronic duo, Pelada, have resonated with audiences for their recontextualized blend of Chicago house, Detroit techno with more abstract & abrasive club music. Chris Vargas’ lyrics, delivered in Spanish, explore themes of power, surveillance, social, environmental and gender politics.

The duo, comprised of vocalist Chris Vargas and producer Tobias Rochman, create a sound combining a patchwork of sequenced analogue synths, drum machines, samplers and voice that is both urgent and powerful. The resulting live sets are living and breathing entities, energetic and combative.

Pelada grew out of the city’s infamous underground afterhours warehouse scene, performing alongside DJs, punk groups, and live experimental electronic acts. These large parties are often illegal, populated by an eclectic mix of punks, club kids, ravers and freaks, promoting a spirit of inclusiveness and open-mindedness. Pelada embraces this diverse crowd united by a shared interest of letting loose, unsatisfied by what is being offered in the more mainstream clubs.

CHRISTINA SEALEY

Since the mid-1990s, Christina has been working with Richard Oddie to create a unique fusion of techno, industrial, and electro-acoustic music. Using modular and analog synthesizers, software, feedback circuits, location recordings and homemade instruments, Oddie and Sealey draw upon the darker tendencies of techno, electro, dub, and combine these elements with the experimental aesthetics of early industrial music. Orphx has gained an international following as one of the pioneering acts within the European "rhythmic noise" scene. They have performed in numerous countries around the world, appearing alongside artists such as Alva Noto, Laurie Anderson, Marcel Dettmann, Monolake, Pan Sonic and many others. Oddie and Sealey have also collaborated on audio/visual projects and exhibitions related to their musical work. Orphx have released ten full-length albums and numerous singles on vinyl, cd and cassette. Their most recent work further develops a dark hybrid of techno, dub and industrial that has garnered critical acclaim from many of techno's leading DJs.

PHÈDRE

PHÈDRE is an electronic duo from Tkaronto/Toronto, Canada. Originating in experimental-pop realms, their richly-textured compositions have grown into instrumental sets of high-bpm rhythmic soundscapes, performed live using sequencers and synthesizers. The ever-changing bass-heavy sets pay tribute to club, breakbeat, jungle and techno, while maintaining Phèdre’s own unique sense of musical beat exploration. Phèdre has toured in Can/USA, Mexico, EU/UK, Japan/Korea/Taiwan, Philippines, Russia, and Lebanon.
