For Background:

As many of you may know, Hamilton’s Pride event commenced in Gage Park a couple of weekends back, as it does every year. Hamilton’s Pride event is often disrupted by evangelical, homophobic religious groups trying to spew hate speech against the Queer community. In years past, their tactics were only as strong as a few signs and a megaphone. These homophobes typically are outnumbered and are drowned out by drum circles and noisemakers before they get shouted out of the park.

However, this year, this was not the only opposition that faced Hamilton’s queer community at Pride. These evangelical, homophobic religious groups were backed up by far-right hate groups such as the “Yellow Vests” (who spew their racist, anti-immigration vitriol EVERY week at City Hall, with police protection), Soldiers of Odin, amongst support from the Proud Boys and other hate groups. These groups escalated their tactics beyond hate speech and begun to physically attack and harass Pride attendees.

Due to the typical presence of hateful evangelical groups at Pride, some of Queer Hamilton activists came out with a 60-foot long, 8-foot tall banner to visually shut them out of the event. However, when other hate groups began to incite violence, Pride attendees had no choice but to fight back. Many left bruised and injured, and at no point, despite being in the park, did the Hamilton Police intervene. Their reasoning for not doing so was because they “weren’t invited”.

In the weeks following Pride, the Hamilton Police faced major backlash from the community. Criticisms went beyond their lack of an action at Pride and focused much on how their protection of these far-right hate groups every week enabled the violence that took place at Pride. At a city meeting to discuss the events, Cedar Hopperton, a local Queer Hamilton activist called out the Hamilton Police in the room on their active support of hate groups, and how they have, and always have, acted as oppressors for the Queer community. Read more in detail about that meeting here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/pride-community-conversation-1.5180950.

Following that meeting, Cedar Hopperton was arrested due to “parole violations” as they were previously wrongfully charged in “inciting a riot” on Locke Street in 2018. These parole violations were on the grounds that Cedar was not to attend any demonstrations while on parole. Therefore being at Pride was a violation. However, Cedar was NOT physically at Pride, nor did they have any part in how those events unfolded. At the moment, a number of Queer activists/Pride Defenders are being targeted by the Hamilton Police, and more charges are continually being laid.

The community is currently banding together to help out these wrongfully convicted folks. It seems that the immediate need is financial support for a legal defense fund. Charges continue to be laid against many other Pride defenders, the amount of money needed to support these folks will likely grow.

Safer Gigs Hamilton, in collaboration Lee Reed, This Ain't Hollywood and other Hamilton artists, are throwing a benefit show to contribute to the legal defense fund in support of wrongfully convicted Hamilton Pride Defenders. All door/ticket sales made at this event will support the legal defense fund, alongside further donations that people may want to contribute.

Please spread the word about this event! Hope to see y'all there!
